How do you recognize an artists abilities? Does the mind of an artist work differently to that of the general viewer?

Artists appear to operate on a different level to those of us who study their works.

Some art is easy to interpret - obvious to most people who just want to appreciate something well-composed and easy on the eye.

Artists, however, need to exhibit something tonally even and with great depth; a work possibly composed of saturated colour, with impact to capture the attention. A new concept. A great many of us feel something upon observation of works of real quality; artists feel either an affinity or an absolute lack of it.

Study the art of the Masters and it is an infinitely emotional experience. Take the opportunity to scrutinize a bronze by an unknown artist and see the skill taken to produce details only the most observant and talented sculptor can create in metal form. An artist is tortured by his or her lack of skill until attaining the recognition of others.

It is not so much that it takes one to know one as that it takes one to know oneself.
